what do i do when my macaw plucks feathers? I am afraid of him plucking himself bald...?
It could be a number of things. It's a good idea to go to the vet so they can take some samples and rule out diseases and infections.
Your bird's skin and feather surfaces could be irritated by smoke or dander from other birds (such as cockatoos). Your bird should be bathing 5-7 times a week in the summer months and 3-5 in the winter months. I would just make sure your bird is bathing enough so he has the chance to get rid of the skin irritatant himself.
If it's emotionally based, then your bird is in distress because of changes made to his environment. My umbrella cockatoo once became insanely aggressive because of a black curtain my brother had put up downstairs at my parents house at the time. We figured it out because it was the only recent change in his environement and by process of elimination.
You also want to make sure your parrot's diet is good and healthy with supplements of fruits and veggies. Here are some great diets for your bird if he isn't already on one;
