Yes, people help in many ways. In fact a study has been done and has shown that Native Americans volunteer in their communities far more than all other groups. That's what makes our communities strong.
My family is very active in the community. We are very proud of our youngest family member because of all her accomplishments. She is a native dancer. She is 13 and she has demonstrated and taught Native crafts.
She plays Fastball (pitcher/catcher) and hockey (right-wing/defense) so she helps to fund raise for her teams. She also runs the canteen for the horseshoe league. At school she volunteers in the library and she tutors the younger grades in math.
Even though she has a learning disability (in reading) and medical problem (with her hip) she doesn't let that interfere with anything she puts her mind to. She just accepts the good with the bad even if someone teases her.
Her teachers call her the “mother hen” because if the class is acting up she can say to her classmates “That's enough now” and they listen to her. She has just been nominated as a “Native Youth Role Model” and we hope she will be chosen.
