Why is it illegal to use bird feathers in crafts? or to harvest bird feathers?
About 45 million Turkeys are killed for thanksgiving alone, each turkey has about 3500 feathers. that is a ton of craft supplies that i can use, and that is just turkeys alone and just during one thanksgiving. i can tell bird flu, but i am sure you can get rid of that, as we use animal fur as well (don't really agree with wearing a ferret).
but why is it that we just let these feathers go to waste? do we just cremate them? i am confused about this.
I'm pretty sure that these days it is illegal to use any feathers that you haven't purchased (in a reputable store) ....technically, that would include any you found on the ground in your own yard, etc.
I think the reason was to reduce the number of birds (especially endangered ones, but not only those) that were being killed, anywhere, just to pluck and sell their feathers... usually by individuals without proper licensing, "factories" and practices, etc.
I think this happened before the avian-type flus were a concern, but not sure.
I don't think the feathers from food-birds go to waste though. Turkey feathers, e.g., are sold I'm pretty sure in craft stores, as are chicken feathers and down feathers though often dyed.
The rest of them are probably sold to be used in other products, perhaps ground up then used as part of cheap animal feed, or even as "down" or feather pillows, etc, and I see possible uses may be carbonizing them then using to store hydrogen in the future or using to make circuit boards... all kinds of uses you wouldn't normally be aware of.
